Norwood Nursery School (NNS) has been part of the Norwood community for 50 years! We’re home to two school age programs; kindercare; a part-time nursery and a full-time preschool program. Run year round, our centre holds a special place in the centrally located Norwood Flats neighbourhood. Our spaces, located at the Norwood Community Center and Nordale School, are bright and cheerful. We are home to valued, long term staff and you’ll enjoy building relationships with great staff, families, and a supportive Board!

 

We are looking for an exceptional, full time Director to lead our busy childcare centre. Reporting to the board of parents, guardians, and community members, the selected candidate will be responsible for facilitating high quality teaching and learning, and care for early years children. This includes directing and assessing the positive emotional, physical, social, and cognitive development of children by preparing and implementing appropriate activities and programs sensitive to each child’s individual developmental abilities, interests, and needs. The ideal candidate will have strong child care and administrative skillset and be able to lead and collaborate in a team environment.

Position Overview


The Director is responsible for the supervision of all aspects of Norwood Nursery School’s over 75-space child care centre. The Director will balance workload between administrative tasks and direct child care responsibilities. They will be responsible for hiring, developing and maintaining staff goals, ensuring that all staff follow the Best Practices Licensing Manual for Early Learning and Child Care Centres, and embrace Norwood Nursery School’s Mission. 

The Director will be expected to develop an excellent relationship with the children, parents and guardians of the Centre and will ensure that the Centre provides a warm, welcoming, and loving environment for the children and their families. The Director will occasionally provide classroom support to maintain ratios and ensure program continuity, and will be a general presence among the staff and children providing support for programming wherever possible. The Director reports to the Board of Directors, and will provide regular updates on centre operations. You’ll have the guidance of a committed volunteer Board of Directors while maintaining professional autonomy in day-to-day operations. The Director will lead with vision and innovation, ensuring that NNS continues to thrive as a high-quality, inclusive, and community-focused centre. Qualifications and Experience


Education

  • Early Childhood Educator (ECE) III required (candidates actively working toward ECE III with extensive leadership experience may be considered).

Leadership & Administration

  • Preference for candidates with a minimum of 2 years’ supervisory and/or administrative experience in an Early Learning & Child Care setting.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to build respectful relationships with program staff, families, the Norwood Community Centre, and Nordale School Administration.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, transparently, and professionally while reporting to a volunteer Board of Directors.
  • Current understanding of contemporary human resources practices.

Finance & Compliance

  • Competency in the finance and administration of a non-profit, charitable organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure or manage financial resources for a child care centre (e.g., grants, subsidies, fundraising, or other external supports).
  • Knowledge of MELCC reporting and licensing requirements.
  • Commitment to leading a safe and healthy childcare environment by managing all Manitoba Public Health directives and related safety protocols.

Programming & Pedagogy

  • Demonstrates competency in creating a safe, stimulating learning environment for preschool and school-age children.
  • Ability to support program development, staff goals, and child-centred best practices.

Technology & Communication

  • Excellent written and digital communication skills, with experience in email, social media marketing, and website support.
  • Experience with Fastoche, QuickBooks, Payworks, and Microsoft Office (or similar platforms).
  • Comfort with new technologies, Apple Mac systems, Gmail, Canva, and social media tools (assets).
  • Valid Manitoba Driver’s License (asset).
