Child Care Assistant -Casual/Substitute
Wage: $16.50/hour (without 40-hour course) and $19.40/hour (with 40-hour childcare course)
Position Type: Casual, On call, As needed
Program: School Age, Preschool
About the Position
We are hiring a reliable, caring, and energetic Child Care Assistant to join our program on a casual and on-call basis. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with children before and after school, at different times of the day, has a flexible schedule and values strong relationships, consistency, and teamwork.
Our program is guided by the Circle of Security approach. Educators act as a secure base for children to explore and a safe place to return when they need comfort, support, or help with emotions.
Responsibilities
- Support school-age children during before-school, lunch-hour, and after-school care
- Support preschool children throughout their daily routines
- Build warm, respectful relationships so children feel safe and supported
- Respond to children’s behaviour using Circle of Security-informed practices
- Help plan and lead age-appropriate activities and games
- Support routines and transitions throughout the day
- Maintain active supervision and ensure health and safety at all times
- Communicate clearly with families and work collaboratively with the team
- Follow centre policies, safety procedures, and licensing requirements

The Ideal Candidate Is
- Able to work a variety of shifts before school, lunch, and after school (7:00-9:00, 12:00-1:00, 2:30-5:30), other shifts as required and for program needs
- Familiar with working in a school-age and preschool program
- Familiar with working within the downtown area
- Flexible schedule
- Strong leadership, positive guidance, and commitment to children of all ages and stages
- Current First Aid/CPR C
- Cleared Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (must be within 3 months of hire)
- Cleared Child Abuse Registry Check (must be within 3 months of hire)
- Accessibility Training Modules (or willing to obtain within one month of employment)
- Have Commit to Kids training (or willing to obtain within one month of employment)
- Circle of Security trained (or willing to be trained)
- Able to make decisions, think quickly, and work in a team-driven environment
- Able to work with children, families, school administration, and community members in a positive and friendly manner
- Familiar with using Fastoche (considered an asset)
- Punctual
- Familiar with Community Child Care Standards Act and Best Practices
- Food Handler's Certificate (considered an asset)
- Knowledgeable in Inclusive practices, working with children in the Inclusion program
