Full Description

The Montessori Substitute Educator provides high-quality, child-centered care and education in alignment with Montessori principles and the centre’s philosophy. This position supports the continuity of programming by stepping into early learning environments as needed to ensure a safe, nurturing, and engaging experience for all children. The Substitute Educator maintains a calm and professional presence, follows established routines, and collaborates effectively with staff to uphold the integrity of the Montessori environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the daily operation in the absence of the regular educator(s).
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment for all children.
  • Follow the Montessori philosophy by observing children, supporting independence, and using gentle, respectful guidance.
  • Assist with classroom routines, including preparation of materials, supervision of indoor and outdoor play, meals, and rest time.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with staff, children, and families.
  • Adhere to all centre policies, licensing regulations, and health and safety standards.
  • Model positive behavior, teamwork, and professionalism at all times.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of the classroom and program.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Child Care Assistant (CCA) Classification preferred.
  • Experience working with young children in a licensed child care or educational setting.
  • Familiarity with Montessori philosophy and methods (training or certification an asset).
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Clear Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry checks or willingness to obtain.
  • C3P Commit to Kids Child Abuse Prevention Training or willingness to obtain.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new environments and routines.
  • Dependable, professional, and committed to maintaining confidentiality.

The Ideal Candidate Is

The ideal candidate is a dependable, professional, kind and adaptable educator who has previous experience of knowledge of Montessori or someone who is open and willing to learn about it! This individual brings a calm and respectful presence to the classroom, fostering an environment that supports each child’s independence, curiosity, and sense of belonging.

The successful candidate will possess strong communication and organizational skills, the ability to follow established classroom routines, and the flexibility to work with different age groups as needed. They will demonstrate sound judgment, patience, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with educators, staff, and families. Previous experience in a licensed early learning environment or familiarity with Montessori methods will be considered an asset.
